Born in Monterey, California, Lowell Northrop was drawn to photography and home movies at a very early age. In 1993, he moved to Los Angeles to earn a degree in Cinema/Television and Public Relations at USC. Since graduating, he has focused primarily on filmmaking – directing short films, music videos, and commercials.
An avid fan of Super 8 film, Lowell is a regular participant in Flicker's annual Attack of the 50 Foot Reels – a festival that forces filmmakers to complete a short film using only one roll of Super 8 film, edited entirely in-camera.
His documentary short Have You Seen Axl Rose? (2002) has been screened at international festivals and microcinemas in Europe, Australia, Canada, and the U.S., where it has received dozens of audience choice awards for its humorous yet heartfelt portrayal of the reclusive rock icon.
Lowell's debut music video for Greg Kurstin's (Geggy Tah, Beck, Inara George) Action Figure Party intertwines reproduced 80s instructional videos with a tongue-in-cheek band performance shot on 35mm. Adding to the amusing nostalgia is a guest appearance by a very familiar face – Curtis Armstrong, aka "Booger" from Revenge of the Nerds (1984). The video placed in the Top 3 at the 2003 Turkey Shoot Music Video Festival at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles.
His video for The 88's "Kind of Light" has aired on MTV2's Subterranean, MTV-U's The Freshmen, FuelTV's Split, RefusedTV, and Music Plus TV.
Lowell is currently building his commercial reel, having just completed comedic spec spots for Citysearch.com, Ikea, and Converse. His sharp comedic sense, casting skills, and clever art direction are what make these spots so unforgettable.
Lowell is continuing to direct music videos in Los Angeles and is developing his next short film – The Happening – based on a feature-length horror script he wrote last year.
